“Thunderbolts are go!”

Following on from this article about Thunderbolt support. This relatively new I/O technology could prove a real game-changer for on-set DITs in the next few years. To be able to move the data around at such high speeds will free more time up to grade and pre-edit onset and this is certainly a “thumbs-up” for directors and producers out there.

I don’t think this is the end of the desktop era (I say this having newly purchased a Mac Pro) as a laptop is still hampered by heat management issues and processing power. This could, however, influence a lot of things for the film and television industry over the next two to three years.
